Jane, this reminds me of any sandbox game that I have played in the past. Take for example, Garry’s Mod which at that time was not called metaverse, but today, if we take into consideration, what you have said about Rec Room, can be qualified as that.
I am curious to hear from you if you think that those platforms are actually representative of the metaverse or that companies take advantage of the title to generate additional revenue?
Thank you for your comment! It is actually a very good question that I keep asking myself. I think for people who have been observing the development of Gaming and XR technologies for a while probably all have this same question in their mind — is Metaverse a real thing given that those so-called “Metaverse” companies have been there even before the term became popular? Is it just a fancier way to call something that’s already there? Are those companies just using this new buzz word to gain capital and attention?
I think many companies are actually using this term “Metaverse” to get resources from the market. However, it’s not that evil from my perspective. We have to admit that the development of emerging technologies requires a lot of capital, talent and resources, and some of the technologies that those companies use are actually relevant to the development of Metaverse — VR, AR, 3D rendering…etc.
Maybe they will not be the winner of the market at the end, but we can learn something from those companies during the process. Just like the rise and fall of Yahoo — Yahoo is not the only company and probably not the best company that represents the Internet, but we can see the tech trends and user behavior change from its history.
That's no longer the case. I recently left one virtual world to come to rec room. I see nothing but toxicity from everyone including the kids. Adults and teens are running around playing mind games on people, bullying people. There's hatred everywhere.
